"Original unique work. Not a print, but a complex flat sculpture created through manual layering of colored papers. The zig-zag pattern, the core of the artist’s kinetic research, creates optical dynamism."
"The work is not a finished object, but an open process: an optical machine powered by the patience of making, capable of transforming paper into light and rigor into visual emotion."
The Rigor of Manual Algorithm: The Aesthetics of the Field in "Making the Circle Square"
In today’s artistic panorama, where the digital often anesthetizes perception, the work "Making the Circle Square" stands out as a learned and vibrant reflection on the heritage of Programmable Art and the N Group. The artist does not merely compose an image, but constructs a true "field of optical events" where paper material becomes a carrier of pure energy.
A Geometry of Time and Hand
The work fits perfectly into the lineage of Umberto Eco and Alberto Biasi, transforming mathematical rigor into a tangible sensory experience. The collage technique, taken here to an almost obsessive level of precision, replaces the mechanical engine of early kinetic objects with a virtual movement generated by pure chromatic interaction. Hundreds of strips of paper, cut and glued by hand, become an "analog algorithm": a sequence of physical instructions guiding the viewer’s eye in an incessant dance between the square’s rigid perimeter and the circle’s centripetal expansion.
The Vibration of the Support
The work lives through a deep dialectical tension. On one hand, the title evokes geometric and philosophical impossibility; on the other, the practical realization resolves the conflict through dynamic perception. The surface is never static; thanks to meticulous study of chromatic frequencies and overlaps, a moiré effect is triggered that challenges the two-dimensionality of the support. Deep blacks and neon yellows are not mere pigments, but spatial coordinates that create sculptural depth.
Conclusion: The Human in the Program
What elevates "Making the Circle Square" beyond a mere optical exercise is the choice of manuality. In an era of vector perfection, the artist claims the infinitesimal error of hand-cutting as an element of "vital disturbance" that humanizes the programmed structure.
