Artist: Mario Giacomelli
This photograph most likely belongs to the mature period of Mario Giacomelli in the mid-1970s, a time when the photographer worked a lot on the abstraction of the natural landscape and on isolated trees, transforming them almost into graphic signs.
It is plausible to place this work within the Storie di terra series (1960s–1980s). This series is not always rigidly closed and includes many images of trees, fields and Marche landscapes photographed in extremely high contrast. Some shots of isolated trees from the 1970s are very rare and not always published in the main books. Many scholars consider these images as variants or autonomous episodes within the landscape research.
Technique: Vintage gelatin silver print
Photograph size: 22 x 35.5 cm
Size with mat: 40 x 50 cm
Date of Print: coeval with the date of the shot.
Series Date: mid-1970s
On the back of the photograph there is the stamp of the Mario Giacomelli Heirs as a guarantee mark certifying its authenticity.

Almost a symbolic self-portrait of nature.
In the 1970s Giacomelli indeed tended to push the landscape toward abstraction, bringing it closer to informal painting.
