Description from the seller
This large and impressive Lithograph (measuring 64 x 84cm, framed under glass) is an ‘abstract’ called “St. Peter’s Fortress” by Sam Francis (1923–1994) a renowned American painter and printmaker known for his vibrant, large-scale abstract expressionist works that blended California light with influences from Monet and Eastern art.
After turning to art during a long, TB-related hospitalization in the 1940s, he became a major post-war artist working in Paris, Tokyo, and California.
He was born June 25, 1923, in San Mateo, California; died Nov. 4, 1994, in Santa Monica, California.and studied medicine and psychology at UC Berkeley. In 1943, he joined the Army Air Corps but suffered a spinal injury in a plane crash, leading to years of hospitalization where he began painting.
Known for utilizing large white spaces and vibrant colour splashes. He moved to Paris in 1950, where he became known as a leading American painter in Europe. He later worked extensively in Tokyo, Mexico City, and California.
His work was influenced by Monet's Water Lilies, Matisse, and Abstract Expressionism, aiming to create immersive, luminous, and energetic experiences for the viewer.
