Title: Red Roses

Author: Genís Capdevila (1860 - 1932)
Style: Floral Realism
Technique: Oil on panel
About the author:
Genís Capdevila was a painter active between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mainly specialized in still lifes and floral compositions. His work is characterized by a careful treatment of light and the volume of the flowers, as well as by a precise brushstroke that seeks to highlight the richness of color and the texture of the petals. This type of floral still life was greatly appreciated in European painting of the era, where naturalistic representation of flowers symbolized both beauty and transience.
The work presents a delicate floral still life featuring an exuberant bouquet of red roses arranged in a dark container that barely shows at the bottom of the composition. The flowers, represented with a dense brushstroke rich in painterly matter, stand out for the intensity of their carmine and scarlet tones, creating a strong contrast with the greenish-blue background. Among the open roses appear some buds and verdant leaves that add chromatic variety and visual balance to the whole.
Soft lighting highlights the texture of the petals and creates subtle transitions of light and shadow, adding depth and volume to the bouquet. The composition, simple yet elegant, focuses all attention on the chromatic richness and vitality of the flowers, following the tradition of 19th-century European floral still lifes.
The work is presented in a carved and gilded wooden frame, decorated with stylized vegetal motifs that run along the entire perimeter. The ornamental relief and the patina darkened by the passage of time give it a classical character that harmonizes with the traditional aesthetics of the still life.
