Description from the seller
Red Animals is an expressive work by Jan Sierhuis in which animals are not depicted realistically but as powerful, dynamic forms. By using red as the dominant color, Sierhuis gives the animals energy, strength and emotional intensity. The work shows how he, with color, line and form, manages to create a sense of movement and vitality, making the animals seem almost to come to life and drawing the viewer into their rhythm and power.
After the war, Jan Sierhuis developed into an expressionist painter, influenced by, among others, Van Gogh, Matisse and Picasso. Together with Appel, Corneille and Lucebert, he found himself at the heart of postwar developments in art.
In 1945 Sierhuis was admitted to the evening program of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, which he left after a conflict. In 1947 he was involved with the group of the Experimentelen and in 1948 with the CoBrA group, although he was too young to officially become a member. Later, in 1962, he co-founded the Amsterdam artists' group Groep Scorpio.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Sierhuis worked mainly abstract. Thereafter he returned to the human figure and shifted his focus to figurative themes such as dancing figures, portraits and landscapes. He spent many summers in Spain, where his passion for flamenco had a great influence on his work. This dance embodies everything that characterizes his painting: color, emotion, movement and rhythm.
Sierhuis has always walked his own path. Freedom and expressiveness form the common thread in his oeuvre.
