EXTRA INFO ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Paul Snoek was the pseudonym of Edmond André Coralie Schietekat (born 17 December 1933 in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium – died 19 October 1981 in Tielt, Belgium). Snoek was a versatile artist: poet, prose writer and visual artist (painter/graphic artist).
From a young age he showed interest in painting and literature. During his student years, he came into contact with experimental Dutch and Belgian art and literary circles, including the Cobra movement and the Vlaamse Vijfenvijftigers.
In 1955 he was co-founder of the avant-garde magazine Gard Sivik, together with fellow experimenters such as Gust Gils and Hugues C. Pernath.
Snoek initially painted in a style aligned with the Cobra movement, and later became active again in the visual arts from about 1972, after which he devoted himself almost exclusively to painting. He also experimented with assemblage objects (“Snoekquariums”).
As an artist Snoek stood not only in literature but also in painting between modernism, avant-garde, and personal expression – he created both abstract and figurative works.
