Isabella Bruno Ysbel - Il fu Mattia Pascal

I am a painter. Image, color, and form have always played an important role in my life. Above all, color has always been the essential, highly present element, characterizing my work since the very beginning of my path. I sell my works with the aim of conveying to those who purchase them positive emotions sparked by a palette of bold colors, generating a visual energy that does not merely represent the subject, but invites the viewer to a sensory experience full of vitality and emotion.

This work is born within the series 'Monsters,' an artistic research project aimed at giving a face and color to the complexities of the human psyche by citing the great classics of literature. The 'Monster' is not depicted as an external or negative entity, but as the projection of a powerful and untamed inner energy.

In painting 'Il fu Mattia Pascal' I did not want to simply portray the crumbling of an identity, but the exact moment in which the soul tries to free itself from its chains. My canvas is the battlefield where the Pirandellian drama unfolds: I chose to decompose the face into clear geometries, almost tribal, because I felt the need to show not a static portrait, but a mask that falls, revealing a psyche that, though dissected, pulses with new awareness. Those asymmetrical eyes and that intense gaze reflect not only alienation, but the awakening of someone who finally stops suffering his life to start looking at it with new eyes, like a 'foreigner' who has understood the game of appearances.

I played with chromatic contrasts precisely to give voice to this transformative tension: if deep purple and shadows evoke 'civil death,' the vibrant red and the orange that dominate the center of the work are the scream of an unstoppable vitality, the warmth of a rebirth that, though arduous, is already underway. Even the thick black lines cannot stifle the light emanating from the face. In this labyrinth of shapes, my Mattia Pascal is not just a man trapped in the past, but an individual who, in the void of his new freedom, discovers the possibility of reinventing himself. There is a secret force in this decomposition: it is the hope that once the old rigid and imposed form is destroyed, there will finally remain space for authenticity, a glow of light that resists beyond every mask and every convention.
