A.R. Penck (1939-2017)
The German painter, sculptor, musician and writer A.R. Penck, born Ralf Winkler, was born in 1939 in Dresden and initially worked in East Berlin in divided Germany. Penck's paintings are inspired by prehistoric art and are characterized by the use of pictorial-language elements such as stick figures, signs and symbols.
Penck is also regarded as the father of the "Neue Wilde" (New Wild), a movement of the early 1980s with an ironic and provocative aesthetic.
The multiple Documenta participant was awarded numerous art prizes and is represented in many major collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
