Description from the seller
David and Bathsheba
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), the 20th century's most prolific and influential genius - inventor of Cubism, master innovator across styles - produced over 2,000 prints in collaboration with legendary Mourlot Frères, making his graphics accessible icons of modernism.
This plate-signed lithographic serigraph (c. 1947-49, 58 x 73 cm; Bloch 442, Mourlot 109), reimagines the biblical tale of King David's desire for Bathsheba after Cranach: a dense, enigmatic tableau of distorted figures - robed Bathsheba, attendants, David lurking amid foliage and architecture - rendered in Picasso's iconic white lines on black, exuding archaic power and psychological tension.
Landmark Importance: From Picasso's postwar graphic peak, this evolved through 10 states (1947-49), blending Renaissance narrative with Cubist/Expressionist distortion - prime example of his biblical reinterpretations. Excellent condition, black frame. Essential Picasso print.
