The heliogravure was printed and published in 1923 by Jan Mankes's wife A. Mankes-Zernike and R.N. Roland Holst.

Jan Mankes is remembered in art history as “Holland's most tranquil painter.” He created about 200 paintings, 100 drawings and 50 prints before he died of tuberculosis at the age of 30. His restrained, detailed work ranged from self-portraits to landscapes and studies of birds and animals. His work is now exhibited in his homeland of the Netherlands at the Museum Arnhem, Belvédère Museum and MORE Museum.
