Malick Sidibé (1936-2016) - Inseparable dancers - 1970
Silver gelatin print on baryta paper - Signed and captioned by Malick Sidibé in 2010. Unique print.
Born in 1936 in Soloba, Mali. Died in Bamako in April 2016. The first known work of Malick Sidibé was documentary photography taken during parties organized by young people passionate about music and freedom as the country prepared for independence.
In 1962, he opened the “Malick Studio” in Bamako. Studio portraits constituted the essence of his work. People came from everywhere to have their portrait taken with Bamako’s eye. He drew attention at the first Bamako Photography Meetings, then exhibited at the Cartier Foundation in Paris and in the world’s leading galleries and museums. He received the Hasselblad Award in 2003 and the Golden Lion in 2007.
