Malick Sidibé (1936-2016) - Les inséparables- 1970
Silver print on baryta paper - Signed and dated by Malick Sidibé in 2010. Unique print.
Born in 1936 in Soloba, Mali. Died in Bamako in April 2016. The first known work of Malick Sidibé was documentary photography taken at parties organized by young people passionate about music and freedom as the country prepared for independence.
In 1962, he opened the ‘Malick Studio’ in Bamako. Studio portraits constituted the core of his work. People came from all over to be photographed with the Bamako eye.
He drew attention at the early Bamako Photography Encounters, then he exhibited at the Fondation Cartier in Paris and in the world's leading galleries and museums. He received the Hasselblad Award in 2003 and the Golden Lion in 2007.
