about the artist
After starting his apprenticeship in 1943 with the Silesian child photographer Grete Bodlée in Breslau, Stefan Moses was interned in 1944 in the forced labor camp Ostlinde due to his Jewish origin. After the end of Nazi rule, he worked as a photographer at the National Theatre Weimar from 1947 to 1950. He then moved to Munich and became a photojournalist. He produced photographs for Revue, Magnum, Twen, and Quick, among others. With the photo reports for Stern created between 1960 and 1968, he became widely known. Particularly with his portraits of people in their professions, first in West and then in East Germany, Moses created artistic documents of the time's social history. Other important photo series he created include: Animal and His Man, Trans-Siberian Railway, The Great Elders, Self in the Mirror, Artists Make Masks, Emigrants and Jews in Germany. Among other honors and awards, Stefan Moses was admitted to the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in 1994, awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany First Class in 2004, and the Lovis Corinth Prize in 2014.
"Stefan Moses masters the psychological and hypnotic means to restore the lost naturalness to people and other living beings."
