Karel Appel, Compositie, a 1960 lithograph in Cobra style, hand-signed, limited edition 45/200, sold with frame, with framed dimensions 81 x 71 cm.
Description from the seller
Lithograph by Karel Appel, executed in an abstract style.
The work is characterized by expressive use of color and a free, energetic visual language, typical of his oeuvre.
Karel Appel was one of the leading figures of the post-war CoBrA movement (1948–1951). His work is regarded as representative of the ideals of this group of artists, who expressed their resistance to traditional painting with its rules and taboos in their work.
During his CoBrA period, Appel painted mythical animals and fantasy beings.
After 1951 his painting style became increasingly intense, until line and color field merged into one turbulent, expressive mass of paint.
