In this impressive portrait, Peter Robert Keil turns his attention to one of the most dazzling figures in art history: Andy Warhol, the founder of Pop Art.
The face appears fragmented and color-split – luminous yellow, deep black, and vivid red meet and create a tense, dynamic composition. The asymmetric portrayal amplifies the impression of multiplicity and references Warhol's own play with identity, surface, and staging.
The bold black lines, the exaggerated eyes, and the reduced geometric language are typical of Keil's immediate, expressive style. At the same time, a fascinating dialogue emerges here between two artistic worlds: Pop Art and Neo-Expressionism.
The richly adorned gold frame consciously contrasts with the raw, spontaneous painting technique and lends the work additional presence.
The composition radiates joie de vivre, directness, and artistic immediacy – a homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically talented mother trudged with her son to West Berlin during the final phase of the war, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting – especially in expressionist artists and the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, who hailed from East Berlin, became his mentor from about 1954 and taught him first craftsman skills and painting techniques.
