Peter Robert Keil is one of the best-known and finest contemporary painters and sculptors in Germany. Keil is known for his bold and beautiful paintings that capture the essence of life. In this expressive portrait, Peter Robert Keil interprets the rock ’n’ roll icon Elvis Presley in his unmistakably expressive manner.

The face is divided into intensive color fields – bold blue, luminous pink, rich green and a striking yellow merge into a tense, energetic composition. The strong black line work structures the portrait and gives it an immediate, almost raw presence.

The cigarette in the corner of the mouth underscores the rebellious aura and the iconic coolness that Elvis still embodies today. At the same time, the dark background on the right side of the image creates dramatic depth, while the vibrant colors in the face captivate the viewer’s attention.

His artistically gifted mother fought her way with her son to West Berlin in the final phase of the war, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting – especially in expressionist artists as well as in the works of Pablo Picasso. The East Berlin-born painter Otto Nagel became his mentor from about 1954 and taught him first craft skills and painting techniques.
