The gouache-painted work on panel depicts a face with a very deep, almost touching gaze that recalls a state of intimate introspection where the viewer can identify with it or interpret it. The braid is meant to symbolize bonds, the memory of female history, and a search for one’s own identity that wants to break out of imposed parameters or definitions.

The painting here has more concise and expressive characteristics, with lacquer-like notes of garanza, and it stands out from the artist’s other oil works for the delicacy of the tones.

Jara Marzulli
was born in Bari and graduated from Bari’s Art High School and later from the Academy of Fine Arts of Bari with top marks, and since 1998 she has participated in exhibitions and competitions, quickly gaining recognition, awards, and important selections.

Her figurative realist painting style quickly became recognizable, and from 2004 international experiences began through fairs, biennales, and major exhibitions.

Her art grows and speaks of a feeling that is at once ecstatic and carnal, made even more incisive and moving by the technical perfection that distinguishes the artist. A lucid and piercing expressive quality, an indefinable purity that dresses itself in painting, a constant play of displacements, of role reversals between the artist who paints and the depicted subject.

Numerous are the prestigious Biennials and art exhibitions where she has shown in Italy and abroad, such as in Turkey, at the Art Taipei fair, Taiwan, China at Red Elation gallery, Hong Kong, the MEAM Museum, Barcelona, Dublin, the Mainz Museum, Buenos Aires in Argentina and London.

Jara Marzulli’s figures have intense, direct, frontal gazes. They have the dignity of subjects ready to respond with great immediacy. The characters that almost fill the canvas space manage to visually represent men, women, girls, and boys who seem to recognize the observer as a stranger, sustain their gaze, push them away, and distance themselves to defend the silence of their precious inner world.
