This photograph is part of his famous series of photo essays on the Heimkehrer (repatriates), documenting the return of the last German prisoners of war from the Soviet Union. The image depicts the emotional reunion of freed prisoner Willi Aderholt with his mother and son, symbolizing the end of a long separation and the human drama of the postwar period. It is a fundamental historical document of West Germany in the 1950s.
