Description of the work
A sensual and mysterious female nude, centered on the belly and navel. The head is veiled by a finely drawn perforated mesh veil that masks the gaze, while the body is adorned with delicate floral motifs and lace simulated with great virtuosity. The fleshy modeling, rendered with sanguine and charcoal, creates a subtle play of transparencies and refined textures, giving the work an atmosphere that is both erotic and poetic.
Symbolic reading – Sensual period of the 1970s
This 1976 work belongs to the series of obsessive nudes and Detheux’s bellies. It intensely explores the matter of the female body. The perforated veil on the face adds an enigmatic dimension: the body is offered yet keeps its mystery.
Plastic approach
In the 1970s, Detheux excelled in the virtuosic simulation of lace and textures in line:
• Fine hatching to create the illusion of mesh and transparent veils
• Sensual modeling of the belly and forms with sanguine and charcoal
• Layering of textures to heighten tactile erotism
Comparisons and place in art history
Close to the fetish explorations of Hans Bellmer, this work perfectly illustrates the most sensual and corporeal period of Detheux.
Interpretation
“La Dentelle du Désir” elegantly embodies the mystery and sensuality of the female body. A refined, tactile work highly attractive to connoisseurs of erotic nudes from the 1970s.
Biography
Robert Detheux (1932–2010) is a key figure of post-war Belgian Surrealism and Dadaism. Winner of the Belgian Young Painter Prize (1953, 1954, 1971), a Saint-Luc graduate, he taught graphic expression at the Atheneum of Tournai until 1996 while developing a personal oeuvre focused on material, sign, body, and dream. His works from the 1970s (sensual belly series, textured nudes, and Botanique exhibitions) are today highly sought after and rediscovered, alongside his spectral portraits from the 2000s.
