Harald Duwe
Harald Duwe was born on 28 January 1926 in Hamburg-Rothenburgsort. From 1942–45 he completed an apprenticeship as a lithographer and art printer, studied at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts with Wilhelm Grimm and Erich Hartmann. He received a two-semester scholarship at the Royal Academy in Stockholm. Since 1951 he worked as a freelance artist. From 1964–77 he was a lecturer for spatial representation at the Engineering School for Vehicle Technology in Hamburg. He became known with his realistic works as one of the most prominent German realist painters of the postwar period. In 1970 he received the Edwin-Scharff Prize of the City of Hamburg. From 1975–84 he was a professor at the Muthesius Art College. Commissioned by Karl Finkes, in 1978 Harald Duwe painted the Last Supper as a major work among his society paintings. In 1981 he received the Culture Prize of Kiel, the capital city. On 15 June 1984 Harald Duwe died in a car accident.
