Description from the seller
Johannes Theodorus (Jan) Toorop, also: Jean Theodor Toorop, (Poerworedjo (Dutch East Indies), December 20, 1858 – The Hague, March 3, 1928) was one of the most important Dutch visual artists from the period 1880-1910.
- Education: the Polytechnische School in Delft (1876-1879), the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (1880-1882) and the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Brussels (1882-1885).
Initially he painted in an impressionist style, but through pointillism he developed into a symbolic painter.
He was also active as a portraitist and designed ceramics, advertising posters and book bindings. Dutch Art Nouveau is often associated with his work. In the last twenty years of his life he was strongly inspired by Roman Catholicism.
Jan Toorop was the father of Charley Toorop, grandfather of the artist Edgar Fernhout and the filmmaker John Fernhout and great-grandfather of Rik Fernhout — four generations of artists.
This framed isography from 1924 shows signs of aging.
