Description from the seller
Antareja Wijoseno Black-Faced Puppet, puppet height 66 cm with handles made of bone
In the Wayang Kulit shadow puppet theater, Antareja is a noble figure often depicted as wise and regal.
FYI Wayang Kulit puppets are handmade. It takes about three weeks to create a puppet. They are cut from dried cow or water buffalo hide, which is hardened and becomes more parchment-like than leather. The puppets may have been used in outdoor theater performances. They are in good condition for their age. The skin is soaked in a solution of tree bark and water, hardened, stretched tightly onto a frame, and dried in the sun for two weeks during the dry season.
The contours of the puppet are cut out with a special thick knife and worked with tiny details carved with a chisel and hammer. They are traced from a master template and are highly stylized. When the cutting is finished, the movable arms are attached and the puppet is painted. The lines are drawn and accentuated with black ink.
