Description:
This lithograph is titled "La Reine" by Antoni Clavé. The motif of the Queen and King is a central theme in his career, appearing from the mid-1950s. This period marks Clavé's transition from stage and costume design to painting and printmaking. The figures reflect his background in theatrical design. There is a tear of approximately 2 cm at the bottom center of the paper.
Artist Profile:
Antoni Clavé (1913–2005) was born in Barcelona, Spain. He worked as an apprentice painter from age 13 while attending evening art school. After serving in the Spanish Civil War in 1936, he moved to Montparnasse, France, in 1939. He was significantly influenced by Pablo Picasso after meeting him in 1944. He received international recognition starting in the 1950s, winning awards at the Venice Biennale (1956) and the São Paulo Biennale (1957). In 1984, he represented Spain at the Venice Biennale.
