Biography of Gilbert Decock:
Gilbert Decock (1928–2007) was a Belgian painter and graphic artist who is regarded as an important representative of post-war geometric abstract art in Belgium. He was born in Izegem and studied at the art academies of Kortrijk and Antwerp, where he quickly developed in a direction aligned with international abstract movements.
In his early career Decock experimented with figurative elements, but from the 1950s his work resolutely evolved into strict geometric abstraction. He worked mainly with sober forms such as lines, circles, grids and planes, and restrained color palettes. His compositions exude calm, order and balance, often built according to deliberate mathematical structures.
Decock was closely connected with the Belgian avant-garde and aligned with the influence of movements such as De Stijl and constructivism. He was also influenced by artists such as Piet Mondrian and Victor Vasarely, though he developed his own, more subdued and contemplative style.
In addition to painting, Decock engaged in graphics and relief works, further deepening his exploration of form and structure. His work has been exhibited at home and abroad and is part of various museum collections.
Gilbert Decock is remembered today as an artist who consistently and soberly explored the essence of form and space, making an important contribution to the development of abstract art in Belgium.
He was inspired and associated with the following artists: Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, Bart van der Leck, Gerrit Rietveld, Victor Vasarely, Josef Albers, Max Bill, Richard Paul Lohse, Camille Graeser, Verena Loewensberg, Auguste Herbin, Jean Gorin, Georges Vantongerloo, Jo Delahaut, Jef Verheyen, Pol Bury, Walter Leblanc, Guy Vandenbranden, Dan Van Severen, Raoul De Keyser, Luc Peire, François Morellet, Jesús Rafael Soto, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Bridget Riley, Kenneth Noland, Ellsworth Kelly, Ad Reinhardt, Sol LeWitt, Frank Stella
