Havengezicht, a 19th‑century Dutch oil painting on panel (17.5 × 24.5 cm; framed 25 × 32 cm), signed in the lower left and sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
Follower of Evert Moll, Harbour View. Oil on panel, 17.5 x 24.5 cm; with frame 25 x 32 cm. Lower left, signed with the name Evert Moll. Provenance: Dutch private collection.
Object description
The subject depicts a harbour scene with a large steamship or freighter placed almost frontally, slightly diagonally from left to right, in the center of the composition. In the foreground the water is spread wide, with short, broken brushstrokes in blue, grey-green, white and ochre that suggest the surface’s liveliness. Alongside or in front of the vessel lie several smaller boats in compact, dark and brighter colored accents. To the left a mooring post or jetty is indicated; in the distance, roughly rendered harbor forms and ship silhouettes appear. The sky is light and overcast, built up from broad, swirling brushstrokes in cool blues and white tones. The signature is located lower left.
Technique and material analysis
The work is executed in oil on panel. The painting technique is predominantly thick, with a visible, loose brushwork that especially creates relief in the water and the sky. The paint is applied in broad, side-by-side strokes with limited mixing on the surface itself. In the ship shapes the paint is applied more compactly and slightly more opaque, while in the sky and on the water the brush direction remains clearly legible. The panel shows a slight bulge in the middle from below. No visible restoration, retouching or cracks are present.
Composition and form analysis
The composition is horizontally structured, with the large ship as the central volume and visual focal point. The bow to the left and the stern to the right guide the eye diagonally through the scene, while the low horizon emphasizes the expansive sky area. The spatial effect does not arise from a finely worked linear perspective, but from overlap, scale differences and atmospheric simplification of the background. The rhythm of the composition rests on alternating long horizontal bands of water and harbor, intersected by the vertical and diagonal accents of masts and loading derricks. The color scheme remains predominantly cool, with small warmer notes in red, ochre, and orange along the waterline and in the vessels in the foreground.
Stylistic and art-historical context
Within the defined context of the Hague School, the work aligns with a late-Impressionist treatment of the Dutch harbor motif, in which atmosphere, water, sky and shipping are brought together in a concise, directly perceived painting style. The scene is in the tradition of maritime and urban harbor imagery as it was frequently elaborated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the Netherlands. The loose brushwork, emphasis on atmospheric coherence and focus on ship volume and water reflections place the work stylistically in the continuity of harbor scenes associated with Evert Moll, without it needing to be an autograph work.

Conclusion
This small harbor scene can be placed within the after-echo of Dutch maritime painting in the spirit of Evert Moll and aligns in subject and painting manner with the late-Impressionist afterflow of the Hague School. The scene is compact and directly constructed, emphasizing atmospheric unity, ship volume and water reflections. The object status is that of a signed panel from a Dutch private collection, with a slight bulge to the panel support at the bottom center and no visible restoration or cracks beyond that.
