Description from the seller
Troelstra, Jelle (1891-1979)
His heart lies with art, especially painting. He therefore takes lessons in Laren from Willy van Schoonhoven van Beurden (1883-1963). Troelstra travels a lot to Scandinavia and temporarily lives in Copenhagen. There he exhibits in 1921 and thereby establishes his name. Subsequently Troelstra leaves for France, where he comes into contact with painters who originally worked in Bergen in North Holland. Troelstra goes there in 1923 after a journey through Corsica to live and thus becomes part of the so-called Bergense School. His style then develops from impressionism to the dark-colored and cubist expressionism characteristic of that school. After a 1927 exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam, his fame grows. He shows landscapes and portraits, among others of his parents and of party colleagues. Jelle Troelstra lives, besides Bergen, also in Leeuwarden, Laren, Blaricum, Hilversum, Amsterdam and ultimately from 1954 in Amersfoort. He repeatedly becomes a member or even chairman of the local artists’ associations, such as De Onafhankelijken and Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam, the Bergense Schildersvereniging and the Amersfoort Artists’ Association. He also becomes chairman of the Professional Association of Visual Artists founded in 1945.
Oil on canvas in good condition as well as the frame. Canvas size 56.5 × 36.5 cm.
Signed in full Jelle Troelstra (difficult to photograph) on the back of the stretcher frame Troelstra and probably also the described subject.
The work is carefully packed and shipped internationally by registered mail.
