Background information
“Confidence” (1980) is an intimate late work by Paul Delvaux. It shows three young women in a classical, architectural setting with arches and columns, a recurring theme in his surrealist universe. The soft lines, dreamlike atmosphere, and subtle erotique are characteristic of Delvaux’s late graphics.
This work was created in the final phase of his career, when he remained fascinated by the female figure and timeless architecture. Lithographs on Japanese paper like this have a particularly soft, velvety appearance that suits the poetic mood of Delvaux. Comparable graphic works from this period are found in important private collections and museums, including the Paul Delvaux Museum in Sint-Idesbald.
