Description from the seller
Claude Fleury – Ecclesiastical History – 4 volumes – 18th century – Monastic library – Leather & gold tooling
For sale is an attractive lot of 4 original antique leather-bound volumes of the important ecclesiastical historical work “Historia Ecclesiastica” by Claude Fleury, dating to the 1760s.
This work ranks among the most important standard historical works in Europe and was intensively used in monasteries and scholarly libraries in the 18th century.
Especially noteworthy is the historical provenance from a monastic library, recognizable by the existing seals of the “Bibliotheca Ordinis Cisterciensis” (Cistercian Order). This provenance adds additional collectible and historical value to the volumes.
Also remarkable are the original leather bindings with decorative gold tooling, which give the books a high-quality and representative appearance. At over 250 years old, these are authentic originals with a patina and character that has grown with time.
