Description from the seller
Lionel Nemeth is a Belgian artist specializing in contemporary figurative string art. His work rests on a fundamental principle: the form is never drawn directly, it emerges only through the tension and density of the thread.
Each work is entirely handmade, requiring thousands of passes of taut thread between nails arranged with precision. This approach gives rise to images that oscillate between abstraction and figuration, gradually revealed by light and structure.
In Held Upright, the female body appears held in a fragile vertical tension, as if suspended between balance and tipping. The posture suggests a contained force, a held presence, almost restrained in space.
The silhouette is built through about 5,000 passes of taut thread between 260 nails. By varying densities, shadows and volumes form, letting the body emerge with astonishing precision.
Close up, the work reveals a complex network of taut lines. From a distance, the figure is revealed with clarity, creating a striking contrast between structure and perception.
This piece required more than 30 hours of manual work.
