Biography of Hoang Anh.
Born in 1984 in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam. Lives and works in Hanoi.
Originally from Thanh Hoa province, located 150 km south of Hanoi, Hoang Anh belongs to that pivotal generation of Vietnamese artists (the 8x generation) who combine cultural heritage with contemporary abstraction. A graduate of the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, he has established himself on Hanoi’s art scene with a bold approach to matter and color.
Graduate of the Artistic Talents program (class of 13) at the Thanh Hoa Culture and Arts School
Graduate of the Painting Department (class of 48) at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts
Style and Artistic Approach
Hoang Anh’s work is distinguished by an intense exploration of texture and movement. Although he explores varied themes such as landscapes, nature, and the female figure, it is in abstraction that he reveals his full expressive power:
• The energy of gesture: A devotee of oil and acrylic painting, he frequently uses a palette knife to apply color in vigorous horizontal strokes. This gesture creates a nearly musical rhythm on the canvas.
• Chromatic contrasts: His work plays with the opposition between often neutral backgrounds (urban grays, textured whites) and flashes of primary colors — fiery reds, solar yellows, and deep blues — that seem to burst from the surface.
• Lyric abstraction: His compositions do not aim to reproduce reality, but to capture its emotional essence. His canvases often evoke ephemeral phenomena: the reflection of light on water, the vibration of heat, or the bustle of a metropolis in full transformation.
Exhibitions and Recognition
An active and recognized artist, Hoang Anh regularly exhibits in prestigious galleries in Hanoi and within national artistic collectives. His works are part of numerous private collections, both in Vietnam and internationally, enchanting with their ability to translate an Eastern sensibility into a universal and modern language.
"Painting is for me a breath, a way to fix the invisible energy that surrounds us." — Hoang Anh
