“The Sleeping Giant” is an aerial photograph by the Italian photographer Sara Zanini, known for her drone work and for her visual research on urban shapes observed from above, where architecture and landscape blend into almost symbolic compositions.
The image depicts the village of Centuripe, in Sicily, one of the most singular towns of the Mediterranean. Perched on the crests of the interior hills of Mount Etna, the inhabited center develops along a series of ridges that branch out into space like arms and legs. Observed from above, the town takes on a surprisingly anthropomorphic form, so much so that it is often described as “the town that looks like a man lying down.”
In this photograph the urban structure becomes almost a monumental figure sculpted in the landscape. The terracotta-roofed houses cluster along the mountain dorsals forming a compact urban organism, while the main streets draw luminous lines that cross the village like pulsating arteries. The evening lights turned on between the houses accentuate this impression, making the town emerge from the surrounding dark landscape.
The title “The Sleeping Giant” arises precisely from this visual suggestion: Centuripe appears as a sleeping giant among the Sicilian mountains, a silent presence shaped over the centuries by the meeting of geography, history and architecture.
The aerial perspective allows the viewer to grasp a dimension that normally escapes terrestrial perception. The village reveals itself as an organic form immersed in nature, where the density of buildings dialogues with the vastness of the surrounding rural landscape. The image thus sits between documentary photography and symbolic vision, transforming a real place into an almost mythological composition.
