Joakim Eneroth - Alone with others

Photograph 1/8 from the series ‘being Alone with Others’ by the artist Joakim Eneroth. It has some minor damage caused by moving. Acquired at a Gallery in Paris in 2007.

It is a series of photographs that depict public places such as beaches, parking lots, ski slopes and parks; spaces in which we are part of a collective, yet we remain anonymous and separate. The situations depicted are like silent meditations on the complex feeling of wanting to experience a sense of belonging, while keeping a certain distance.

The series can also be interpreted as a contemplation of the existential dilemma of being alone in our personal life experience. We are born alone and we die alone.

The photographs from the Being Alone with Others series have been taken in India, Sweden, Spain, England and the United States, and are created with a large-format tilting camera.
