Labourage des champs is an original 1930–1940 Impressionist oil painting by Eugène Giraud (XX), France, 56 × 64 cm, sold with frame, hand signed, in excellent condition and weighing 3 kg, depicting an autumn landscape with a central tree and a lone figure.
Description from the seller
A compelling and richly textured French landscape, attributed to Eugène Giraud (20th century), presenting a vivid interpretation of rural life in the South of France.
The composition depicts a cultivated field in the process of labour, structured around a powerful central tree whose dense foliage is rendered with energetic, almost sculptural paint application. In the middle ground, a solitary figure stands beside agricultural equipment, reinforcing the human presence within a worked landscape — a recurring theme in French regional painting of the early to mid-20th century.
The distant hills, softly modelled in bluish-violet tones, contrast harmoniously with the warm ochres and earthy yellows of the foreground, creating a balanced chromatic dialogue characteristic of Provençal scenery.
Artistic analysis
The work is executed in oil on panel using a pronounced impasto technique, with thick, expressive layers of paint applied by brush and palette knife. The surface reveals a highly tactile quality, with visible ridges and dynamic strokes that catch the light and enhance depth.
This material approach aligns with the legacy of Post-Impressionist and regional French schools, where emphasis is placed on:
structure through colour rather than line
physicality of paint
atmospheric rendering of rural environments
The handling of foliage, in particular, demonstrates a confident and gestural technique, while the ground is built up in dense, stratified layers, suggesting both movement and weight.
