Description from the seller
The Atari Mega ST2 (often abbreviated to Mega 2) is a professional variant of the Atari ST line of computers, released in 1987. In contrast to the earlier consumer models (520ST and 1040ST), the Mega series was designed as a business workstation for tasks such as desktop publishing (DTP) and music production.
Key specifications
• Memory: Standard with 2 MB RAM. The motherboard is identical to that of the Mega 4, but in the Mega 2 half of the RAM chip pins are left unused.
• Processor: Motorola 68000 running at 8 MHz.
• Graphics: Includes a Blitter chip, a hardware accelerator that significantly speeds up graphical operations (such as moving windows) compared with the standard ST models.
• Operating system: Uses TOS (The Operating System) with the GEM graphical interface.
• Design: Features a detachable, improved keyboard and a sturdier case with room for an internal hard drive or additional expansions via an internal bus.
Extra features
• Real-time clock: Includes a battery-powered clock to remember the date and time when the computer is turned off.
• MIDI: Like all STs, the Mega 2 has built-in MIDI ports, which made it a long-time standard in professional music studios.
• Storage: Contains an internal 3.5-inch floppy drive (720 KB) and can be connected to external hard drives or the Atari laser printer.
• The Atari Mega ST 2 (often abbreviated to Mega 2) features a detachable keyboard, 2 MB RAM, and an built-in Blitter chip for faster graphics performance.
Target audience: Focused on business applications such as desktop publishing (DTP) and CAD.
This set includes vintage hardware and software from the German company Steinberg, known for developing music software such as Cubase and MIDI interfaces.
Cubase software packages are intended for older computer systems such as the Atari ST.
The red cartridge is a hardware dongle required to run the software.
Monitor
The Atari SM124 is an iconic 12-inch monochrome CRT monitor that was introduced in 1985 as the standard display for the Atari ST computer bunny. It is renowned for its extremely sharp image, which at the time made it the preferred choice for serious use such as desktop publishing (DTP) and music production with programs like Cubase and Notator.
Key specifications
• Screen: 12-inch diagonal with "Paper White" phosphor.
• Resolution: 640 × 400 pixels (High Resolution mode).
• Refresh rate: About 71 Hz (71.286 Hz), yielding a very calm, flicker-free image.
• Connection: A fixed cable with a 13-pin DIN connector that plugs directly into the monitor port of the Atari ST.
• Audio: Built-in mono speaker; volume controlled by a knob on the side (which also serves as the power switch).
Special features
• 72 DPI: The monitor is calibrated so that the pixel density is exactly 72 dpi. This made on-screen text size exactly match the size on a printed page (WYSIWYG).
• Monochrome only: The SM124 cannot display colors and does not support the Atari ST’s low (320x200) or medium (640x200) resolutions without modifications. When this monitor is connected, the Atari ST forces the computer into High Res mode.
• Black border: By default the image has a wide black border. Although some users tried to adjust this (overscan), the design was intended to ensure sharpness right into the corners.
The set also includes various program floppy disks, including games.
The set is functional and shows light signs of use.
Delivery can be by mail or pickup.
