In the 19th century, the Red Dragon had the reputation of being one of the most famous and most effective grimoires. Evocation of the Devil and necromancy practice are in the spotlight.
Eliphas Levi, in his work « Dogme et Rituel de Haute Magie », notes that the true Red Dragon and « Le Grand Grimoire » have a fairly similar content, despite some notable differences.
Very fashionable in the 19th century, the true Red Dragon explains how to invoke the Devil and compel him in order to obtain whatever one desires. It is not a matter of making a pact with the master of demons to become his slave or of worshipping him. It is about constraining him, making him a servant, and this with the help of God. This is why the true Red Dragon is recommended to magicians and sorcerers already seasoned, who will not be fooled by the Devil. The work is also known for its hierarchy of infernal spirits.
Some parts of the true Red Dragon are drawn from the « Grand Grimoire » and the « Clavicules de Salomon ». It is also very often associated and issued with another grimoire: La Poule Noire, and this from the middle of the 19th century.
