Tommaso Spanu (1944–2022) is regarded as one of the greatest pipe producers in Italy and internationally. In 1979 he founded his workshop in Sassari, introducing a 100% artisanal production, entirely Sardinian, with particular attention to the selection of Sardinian briar (Erica Arborea), which he personally harvested and cured for over 10 years. Spanu is known for being the world's only pipe producer to make pipes entirely in Sardinia, from briar harvest to finishing. Tommaso (who passed away in 2022) was an ambassador of Italian handmade pipes, exporting his creations to the United States and Japan.
