Description from the seller
With this portrait-format piece (40 × 60 cm), Medsan choreographs a striking encounter between the nostalgic universe of retro video games and the traditional aesthetics of Japanese woodblock prints. This giclée features a formidable giant carnivorous plant, red with white spots, an indispensable reference to the famous Mario franchise, erupting in the middle of a dense bamboo forest.
The visual clash and the humor of the composition lie in the organic integration of this iconic enemy into the Edo period. In place of the classic green industrial pipe, the monstrous plant emerges with teeth bared from the depths of a circular stone well overgrown with moss. Facing this terrifying apparition, a traveler wearing a straw hat (kasa) and a red tunic — a subtle chromatic nod to the famous plumber — is startled mid-walk. Struck with fear, he tips backward onto the dirt path, dropping his walking stick and a few personal effects.
The impact of the composition is masterfully highlighted by a palette dominated by the deep greens of the bamboo grove, creating a vegetal frame that powerfully emphasizes the bright red of the carnivorous plant and the traveler’s clothing. The assertive line, black outlines, and flat colors scrupulously respect the codes of ukiyo-e, endowing this ambush scene with a dynamic, humor-filled pop-art aesthetic. The traditional vertical cartouche at the top right, on a red background, houses the artist’s signature in katakana (メドサン) and completes the visual balance.
A conceptual piece, both aesthetic, funny and nostalgic, ideal for bringing a pop, geek, and graphic touch to a design-savvy, contemporary interior.

About the Studio:
Atelier Joconde is a studio of artists gathered around a living, plural contemporary creation. Set up like a true art production space, the studio operates both in collective creation and individual approaches, depending on projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative and introspective body of work with cinematic and realistic influences. By his side, Medsan, oriented toward pop art painting, explores color, modern iconography, and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo participates in a more instinctive exploration, blending abstract art, naïve art, and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, created, and followed within the studio, with a shared artistic standard and a unique identity for each artist.
