DESCRIPTION:
Museum director and art historian Dr. Friedhelm Häring describes the painterly universe of Ralf Altrieth as follows:
"There is a great deal of poetry in this painting, as in all the works of this artist. They are populated with narrative codes and fantastical tales. In this sense, the painterly poems of Ralf Altrieth are a pure child’s chant... But the most astonishing thing that manifests in these canvases is a communicative tenderness for the emotional states of human beings."
In his paintings, Ralf Altrieth lets the forms emerge and transform with the stroke, in a free and spontaneous movement. Figures often appear fleetingly, as if hesitating between being and disappearing.
The image forms through superpositions; the elements seem to float, respond to each other, intertwine, creating a vibrant and open visual space.
The title (here: 'Exercise the ghost, that’s me') is often added afterward. It suggests a lead, a narrative, poetic dimension, or sometimes simply humorous, never confining the image to a single interpretation.
An expressive work that immediately catches the eye and gradually reveals all its richness.
