Description from the seller
A fine Campaigner trunk for British military officers, dating to the 1830s, rectangular in shape, made of camphor wood, with hand-cut brass binding and hardware, and a brass handle on top for hand carrying. Includes the original key and the lock functioning; the matching iron fitting to close the lock is missing. Includes an internal drawer and everything as shown in the photo. There are brass initials E. P. of the officer to whom it belonged. Weight about 4 kg.
Campaign-era chests and coffers were the travel items of British military officers who bought and commissioned them for their campaigns abroad in India and Ceylon (British Raj) and throughout the British Empire. The officers, who mostly belonged to the upper classes, were used to a certain standard of living and found it unthinkable to travel without the essentials.
