Biography
Helmut Newton (1920–2004) was one of the most important fashion and portrait photographers of the 20th century. Born in Berlin, after his emigration he worked in Paris, Monaco and Los Angeles for international magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair and Elle. With his uncompromising visual language, charged with eroticism, he shaped the visual culture of luxury fashion like few other photographers of his time.
Newton photographed, among others, for Chanel and Hermès, thereby creating visual worlds staging elegance, power and sensuality.
His inimitable style — cold, staged and yet provocative — also influenced the aesthetics of other luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton and Patek Philippe, which still embody today similar values of exclusivity and perfection.
Today his works are in the world's most important museums and collections and are among the most valuable pieces of contemporary photography. Helmut Newton remains a synonym for luxury, femininity and the art of staging.
