Ayrton Senna da Silva (São Paulo, March 21, 1960 – Bologna, May 1, 1994) was a highly successful Brazilian racing driver who became Formula 1 World Champion three times within a span of ten seasons. He started in 161 races, securing pole position 65 times and winning 41 races.
Ayrton Senna began his racing career at the age of four in karting. After competing in the Formula Ford 1600 and 2000 classes, he won the 1983 British F3 title ahead of Martin Brundle.
He died as a result of a crash in the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994. His death caused considerable turmoil in the F1 world and led to a whole range of safety measures.
