Portasigarette in .875 silver with niello, of Russian origin (Moscow), dating to 1834, measuring 6.5 × 1.8 × 1.8 cm and weighing 61 g, in good condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
The object shown in the image is an antique cigarette case in silver and niello, probably of Russian or Caucasian origin. The intense black contrast on the silver background is obtained using niello, a dark metal alloy consisting of sulfur, copper, silver, and lead, melted into the engraved grooves of the metal.
It features a dense geometric motif in a stylized four-leaf or floral pattern, set within a checkerboard border. This type of symmetrical, repetitive decoration is characteristic of productions from Veliky Ustyug in Russia or from the renowned workshops of the Caucasus (such as Kubachi), popular between the late 19th century and the early 20th.
The style suggests a period between the late 1800s and the early 1900s (late Imperial Russian era). The stamps inside this object are Russian imperial marks, which allow dating it with great precision to the end of the 19th century. In conclusion, it is an authentic cigarette case in silver and niello from the era of Tsar Nicholas II, made in 1834. Interior in vermeil silver.
The hallmarks and the silver marks on both faces of the tobacco case are clearly visible. The lot will be adequately packaged and shipped with contracted couriers and associated online tracking.
