The beam balance is a scale based on the lever principle, consisting of a rod with a fulcrum and a sliding weight called the "roman". To weigh an object, it is attached to one end of the rod and the "roman" is moved along the graduated rod until the balance reaches horizontal equilibrium.
Of Etruscan origin, the beam balance was widely used in antiquity for weighing goods, especially larger items and higher value.
