Description from the seller
Oil on canvas stretched/cane signed M. SAROLIAN (endorsed on the back, autograph signatures in Armenian and French, dated 2005. From a private collection, coming from the painter's family, in very good condition.
Good dimensions: 55 cm x 38 cm
Here, a very beautiful work by Marc Akop SAROLIAN, French painter of Armenian origin, born in 1927 in Marseille where he died in 2017
The painter depicts a harvest scene animated by the activity of the peasants. In the foreground, a couple ties the sheaves of wheat, in the background two others busy themselves transferring the wheat from the cart to the mill, while in the middle ground the horses patiently await. This three-plane scene gives the work its full depth, underscored by the play of light contrasts and the brilliance of the colors. The summer atmosphere is magnificently conveyed by the overall brightness, the bright yellows of the wheat, the pure blue of the sky and its white clouds of good weather, and the warmth one feels. At the top of the cart and the imposing millstone, the silhouettes of the peasants in action elevate the composition like a ladder reaching toward the sky, under the humane gaze of the artist.
After joining Armenia in 1936 with his family, Sarolian trained at the Beaux-Arts in Yerevan in 1946. He develops a high technical mastery of drawing, color, and light contrasts that he explores through varied subjects—landscapes, seascapes, portraits...
He returns to Marseille, his hometown, in 1967 where he fully and definitively dedicates himself to his art.
In 2013 a major retrospective was dedicated to him at the Armenian House of Culture in Marseille
