Description from the seller
Post-Impressionist Still Life with Calendulas - Signed Elson (1921)
Description of the work:
This luminous oil on canvas, dated 1921, is a remarkable example of interwar flower painting. The composition features a vibrant bouquet of orange calendula flowers, arranged in a glazed ceramic vase with iridescent reflections. The artist enriches the scene with objects of art: a brass bowl with golden reflections and a delicate pendant, placed on an entablement with blue and violet nuances.
The style of the work is decidedly post-Impressionist. The artist uses a divided, generous brushwork (visible impasto on the flowers) to capture the light. The color palette is bold, playing on the complementary contrast between the bright orange petals and the cool tones of the vase and background, creating an atmosphere that is both serene and energetic.
Condition and Restoration:
The painting has benefited from special care to ensure its longevity and aesthetics:
- Cleaning & De-varnishing: The pictorial layer was freed from its old oxidized varnish, restoring the colors to their original brightness.
- Minor restorations: A few very punctual and discreet touch-ups were made to integrate light surface wear.
- Tension & Finish: The canvas shows perfect tension on its frame. A final protective varnish was applied.
- Overall condition: Excellent. The work is sound, stable and ready for display without additional costs.
