Description from the seller
Amédée Boucher (1899 - 1960): The Bridge
The painting measures without a frame 52 x 63 cm / with a frame 72 x 83 cm.
It is executed in oil on hardboard and signed at the bottom right, but not dated.
Based on comparison with other dated works by the artist, it is likely to have been created between 1945 and 1955.
The frame is a carved, gold-painted wooden frame dating from around 1900. It shows hardly any wear or chips despite its age. The painting itself is in very good condition.
Amédée Boucher was a well-known post-Impressionist artist of the early 20th century. He was a member of the prestigious Société des Artistes Français and in the 1950s several of his works were exhibited at both the Galerie de Seine in London and the Galerie Haussmann in Paris. The subjects of his paintings (mostly landscapes and cityscapes) he found mainly in the Alpes-Maritimes region as well as the nearby surroundings of the artist village Barbizon.
The present artwork was purchased directly in France a few years ago.
Overall, this painting, especially in combination with the magnificent gold-colored wooden frame, is a beautiful, very well-preserved and highly decorative example of French mid-century art.
