Description from the seller

Rare Varayoc or mayor’s staff from an 18th-century Peruvian alcalde, from the Viceroyalty period of Peru.

Made of chonta wood on which bands and a silver knob are applied, as well as a buckle to hang from the belt. The twisted tip with a helicoidal design is also made entirely of antique silver.

The decoration includes hand engravings with iconography of floral crosses and volutes, symbols of the union between the Catholic faith and the viceregal civil order.

In excellent condition, the piece has not been cleaned to respect the patina acquired over the centuries, which in the decorations has taken on golden tones while at the far end the patina is dark.

From a private collection.

Historical Context: In the 18th century, the Varayoc was the indispensable legal instrument to administer justice, organize labor, and preside over religious ceremonies. It was the highest expression of authority in the indigenous cabildos of the Viceroyalty.

Dimensions: 100 x 4 x 4 cm
Weight: 430 grams.

It will be shipped protected and with a tracking code.
