Portrait d'homme by Bisschops (XX), circa 1900–1910, a Belgian marouflé oil painting on canvas, presented in a Louis XV rocaille carved wooden frame and sold with the frame.
Description from the seller
Ancient portrait of a man, from the late 19th century / early 20th century, signed “Bisschops”, presented in its oval carved wooden frame in Louis XV style.
This piece has a remarkable decorative presence. The portrait depicts a man of notable bearing, treated in the spirit of bourgeois portraits of the Belle Époque. The oval format and the richly carved frame immediately reinforce its elegance and old-fashioned charm.
The technique appears to correspond to an old photograph enhanced by hand, mounted on canvas, a process characteristic of the late 19th century / early 20th century. This feature gives the object a particular interest, at the crossroads of early photography, painted portrait, and decorative art.
The signature “Bisschops” is visible on the work.
The frame, in carved wood, features a Rocaille decoration in Louis XV style, with an elegant ribboned knot at the top. It perfectly complements the portrait and greatly contributes to the overall appeal.
Dimensions with the frame: 55 x 38 cm.
Condition: good overall presentation, with normal signs of aging. To note: light wear, some marks on the frame, and a small discreet tear of about 1 cm on the left side. The whole remains very decorative and retains a strong visual impact.
Approximate period: late 19th – early 20th century.
Approximate technique: hand-enhanced photograph, mounted on canvas.
Frame: Louis XV / Rocaille style.
Highlights:
• visible signature “Bisschops”
• sought-after oval format
• very beautiful carved frame
• Belle Époque aesthetic
• decorative object of character
• ideal piece for an antique interior, a charming home, or a cabinet of curiosities
