Klaus Prior (*1945 in Wesel, Germany) is a Swiss sculptor, painter and draftsman.
Born in the year of Germany's defeat and Europe’s liberation from National Socialist terror rule. Raised in the rubble desert of a Rhineland town, Klaus Prior grew up in a society that refused to confront its past.
Klaus Prior belonged to the postwar generation that could not accept the guilt-defense and the repression of the perpetrators’ generation.
When the newly built economic miracle called him to arms or drafted him, when the so-called call-up order was issued, he fled the country. He did not go to West Berlin like many conscientious objectors, but moved to Switzerland.
Switzerland was then for many artists the better country, the land where one was not surrounded by old Nazis and anti-Semites. It was easier to breathe there and one could create in peace.
In 1967 he began studying painting at the Kunstgewerbeschule St. Gallen. Three years later he relocated as a freelance artist to Ticino. Klaus Prior engaged with wood sculpture, iron casting and painting. Since then he has lived and worked in Ticino.
Klaus Prior's theme is the human figure. In the 1980s he increasingly turned to sculpture in addition to painting. Most of the works, mainly carved from wood and worked with a chainsaw, resemble the works that emerged in the 1980s by Baselitz and A. R. Penck, as well as the wooden sculptures by Balkenhol or Hans Scheib.
Since 2008 he has focused strongly on painting, bronze and iron sculptures, as well as works for the public space.
Numerous exhibitions and participating exhibitions in various European countries.
