Antoine Le Pautre (1621/1679) was one of the great architects of the Louis XIV court and a member of the Academie d’ Architecture, since its creation in 1671.
Le Pautre is best known for his style, which unites classical grandeur with spatial innovations, splendidly illustrated in the present suite.
The engraving of the plans is attributed to Jean Marot, while that of the façades to Jean Le Pautre.
The suite comprises 62 plates (two plates are numbered “30” and two plates “31”) and an explanatory text attributed to Charles d’ Aviler.
The last plate (numbered 60), depicting a siege scene, with the arms of the prince of Conti, of technique and spirit very different from the rest of the plates, was etched in aquaforte by Jean Le Pautre.
(Preaud. Inventory of the French collection, engravers of the 17th century; volume 11, Antoine Le Pautre, Jean Le Pautre and Jacques Le Pautre;
n. 232, p. 134, 2o state).
Splendid and very solid contemporary binding in full leather, skilfully and professionally restored, with an elegant six-band spine, bearing elaborate decorations in a frame, as well as a red morocco inlay, with a gilt title.
Very good interior conservation as well, with relatively fresh and clean sheets.
The beautiful plates are mounted on reused printed tongue-tips.
A text leaf has been added (between pages 20 and 21) relating to the previous edition, also noted in pencil on the same leaf.
Very slight browning.
Tears, not invasive, professionally restored to plate 11.
A pencil manuscript note “Biblioteca Destailleur, May 1891” on the recto of the front free endpaper.
The original endpapers are present and preserved.
Excellent and refined copy, complete and original in every part.
